LEO in Action: Powering Emergency Flood Relief for Dongting Lake Dike Breach (Hunan, China)

2024.08.02

Background

This year, Hunan Province has faced 18 rounds of intense rainfall, totaling 1,156.5 millimeters. Of this, 865 millimeters fell since the start of the flood season, which is 50% higher than the average for this time of years.

Since the onset of the monsoon, Hunan has experienced 17 days of heavy rain, with areas receiving over 300 millimeters and 500 millimeters covering 57.2% and 13% of the province, respectively. This period of severe rainfall has been marked by its prolonged duration, overlapping impact, and extreme conditions, resulting in numerous disaster risks.

In July, 2024, a critical dike on the Dongting Lake frontline in Tuanzhou, Huarong County, Yueyang City, Hunan Province, therefore, experienced severe piping failure, leading to a breach after unsuccessful emergency containment efforts, resulting in the area circled by embankments to be flooded.

In response, the command center issued urgent directives for rescue and relief operations to safeguard the lives and property of local residents, all over 5,000 people have been moved to resettlement sites.

LEO Actived Emergency Flood Relief Promptly

Following the dike breach repaired, flood drainage operations commenced to manage the severe water accumulation within Huarong County. LEO, deeply committed to social responsibility, promptly responded to the calls from Hunan Province. A dedicated team of 32 LEO personnel, including technicians, after-sales service staff and representatives, was quickly dispatched to the site to engage in emergency flood relief efforts.

Two Main Tasks

1. Rapid deployment of 10 high-flow WQ submersible sewage pumps for immediate drainage.

2. Repair and maintenance of 15 ZLB vertical axial flow pumps at the Tuanzhou West, North, and East pump stations, which were submerged during the flood.

Once completed, these efforts could achieve a drainage capacity of 4.54 million cubic meters per day.

Unified Efforts in Disaster Relief: LEO's Commitment in Action

Throughout the emergency response, LEO Pumps maintained close communication with the command center and various suppliers, ensuring a coordinated and effective disaster relief effort.

From the moment they arrived, the LEO flood relief team worked tirelessly, racing against time. They upheld LEO's mission of developing and flourishing with all stakeholders. Their relentless dedication ensured the efficient installation and operation of the equipment. The repair services at the Tuanzhou West Pump Station enabled it to function normally, achieving a daily drainage capacity of 390,000 cubic meters, earning high praise from the command center. This operation showcased LEO's strong sense of social responsibility and corporate commitment.
